    Default Speedway Magna

    Hi,
I have just purchased a Magna speedway car and am looking at slowly increasing the performance of the engine, currently run a 6G74 3.5L V6 with 5 speed manual gearbox (locked). The engine is stock from what I can see so far apart from a K&N pod filter, I have a set of extractors to fit on it and am looking into doing something with the cams and cam timing and either a computer reflash or an after market one. Also looking into possibly lightening the stock flywheel or buying an alloy one. As I said I want to do this nice and slowly as I believe too much power being FWD will make it quite hard to drive on dirt but I am open to any tips or ideas any of you may have or places to buy gear from or get things made.

    Thanks in Advance

You may have already seen this:

    https://modifiedmitsubishi.com.au/viewtopic.php?t=38633

It aligns closely with your own thoughts, so no real surprises there.

As suggested in the above thread, if the scrutineers/officials don't look too closely at it, you might get away with fitting a 3.8 litre 6g75 380 engine.

It would be cheaper and easier than trying to extract power gains from a 6g74.

Engine number and rocker covers aside(and leaving off the plastic engine cover with "3.8LV6" emblasoned on it), the external differences between a 6g74 and a 6g75 are quite minimal once the engine is installed and replacing the coil packs(6g75) with a distributor triggered ignition as per a 6g74.

At club level many years ago, I did not get involved very much with "dirt" speedway(so mainly the "conventional" paved circuits), although I did compete in and was ranked 49th out of 500 competitors in the Nastrak "Star Search" NASCAR events held at Bob Jane's Thunderdome aka Calder Park Raceway in 1990.

This was much more closely aligned with conventional circuit racing than was "dirt track" racing.

Understandably, there would not be much love for the Magna in speedway events due to the front wheel drive(FWD) configuration.

For that reason, there is not much discussion about this on the www.

    Hi,
Thanks for the link, much appreciated and yes not much love for the Magna around Speedway circles which is what has drawn me to it in the first place and also considering that in the SSA (Speedway sedans Australia) Junior sedan class for kids 10-17 years the FWD cars the Charades, Lancers and Excels are very dominant so why not in the senior classes?

The small/medium car market has been devoid of RWD cars for many years.

The last would have been the Nissan Skyline of 1990 vintage.

Guess what, I owned 3(1988,1988,1990) of these at one point.

Everything else at the reasonable price point was FWD.

Accordingly, other than BMW 3 series/Mercedes Benz "C" class or "grey" imports, there was almost nothing at all available that was small/medium and RWD after about 1990.

Hence the profusion of small/medium FWD cars like Charade/Lancer/Excel.....

    Hi,
I seemed to have hit a snag with the engine developing a miss fire on cylinder 2 seems the injector is stuck open all the time with the ignition off, I have replaced the injector with a new one but the problem still persists, I purchased another computer to test that it want that but have been able to test due to the plugs on the wiring loom being different (seperate issue) any ideas would be greatly appreciated.
